Central Park West is the one avenue in Manhattan where the apartment houses are more famous than the people in them: the Dakota, the San Remo, the Beresford, the Majestic, the Eldorado and the Century, most of them co-operatives from the five years either side of 1930, with boards that still decide who may buy.

The tower era arrived at Columbus Circle with the Time Warner Center and Trump International, and then at 15 Central Park West, whose 2008 closings reset the price of a Manhattan apartment. The newest arrivals, 200 Amsterdam and 50 West 66th, are the tallest buildings on the West Side and the subject of its longest planning fights.
